Friends and Colleagues,
Summer has FINALLY arrived after our long, wet but beautiful Spring!
Nevada City is into a banner year for biking. This Father's Day Sunday is the 50th Anniversary of the historic Nevada City Classic Bike Race. Originally organized as the Tour of Nevada City by the late Charlie Allert, the Nevada City Classic is one of the oldest and most elete races in the country.
Charlie Allert was a print shop owner and an avid cyclist when he moved to our area in 1960 from San Francisco. He invisioned a unique event for biking enthusiast. He added unforgettable local flare by awarding all the winners a gold nugget! Locals scoffed at his idea initially - especially closing down the town for a 40 mile race! But his enthusiasm was contagious and the event took hold. The first professional women's race began that same year as the men's.
I (John) attended my first race in 1968 and have attended 30-35 races over the years! Too many to count! It has been a lot of fun to watch riders go on to fame around the world. And it was really special to have Lance Armstrong return after 7 Tour de France wins and break away going up Pine Street and bolt to victory here last year! Lance and 3 time Amgen winner - Levi Leipheimer set the stage for Nevada City to be the opening site for this year's Amgen Tour of California. The streets of Nevada City were bursting with pride and excitement last month as Lance, Levi and so many world reknowned cyclists took off and whirled through our City!
I remember the late 1970's and early 1980's when Greg LeMond soared through here as the "Reno Rocket". LeMond won the Nevada City Classic three times and went on to the World Championship, Tour de France and beyond. But then we have seen a lot of men and women riders do that!
Greg LeMonde claims that winning second-place in the Nevada City Classic as a fourteen-year-old kid was a milestone of is career. "It was then that I realized that I could compete with some of the best American riders.
Bicycling is a big part of the outdoor recreation in our county. It is one of the many sports that is fun for the entire family and good for you, too! That is why when we built the Harmony Ridge Market in 1994 we added 12 extra parking places − more than the county required − to promote the bicycle trail here at the beginning of the Pioneer Trail.
Nevada County Local Events A lot is happening this summer in the Sierra Foothills! Don't miss our July 4th Hometown Heros parade down Broad Street at 2pm on July 4 to be followed by entertainment and a grand fireworks display at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. No body throws a better 4th of July Celebration than Grass Valley and Nevada City. Great fun for all the family! Summer Nights, Summer Fest, NC Fair Rooted in Tree--ditions and so much more! For more details visit our Nevada County Local Events - Summer section on our website. For those outside the area, we hope you will come visit and discover why Nevada County really is a wonderful place to live!
We invite everyone to come and enjoy Nevada City and all of the recreation we offer with the lakes, rivers, and Tahoe National Forest.
